Over the past year, Michigan Works! Youth Career Advisor Erin O’Rourke had the privilege of working with Sara, a dedicated and determined student who was placed at Grayling Elementary School for her work-based learning experience as a paraprofessional.

From the start, Sara demonstrated a deep passion for working with children and a strong desire to grow in the field of education. However, she faced a few significant barriers that could have hindered her progress—primarily transportation and access to professional clothing. Without a reliable way to get to her placement, and limited resources to purchase appropriate work attire, Sara was understandably anxious about whether she could take full advantage of this valuable opportunity.

Recognizing Sara’s commitment and potential, Erin worked with her to secure public transportation tickets to ensure she could get to and from Grayling Elementary consistently and on time. Erin also coordinated resources to provide Sara with professional clothing that aligned with the school’s expectations, helping her feel confident and ready to step into her role.

With those supports in place, Sara quickly began to thrive. She arrived each day prepared and eager to contribute, forming strong connections with both staff and students. Her supervisors at the school noted her reliability, positive attitude, and natural ability to engage with young learners.

By the end of her placement, Sara not only fulfilled her learning objectives, but also gained meaningful real-world experience that will serve as a solid foundation for her future in education. Youth Career Advisor Erin shares that supporting Sara through this journey was a reminder of how a few targeted resources—and a lot of heart—can make all the difference in helping students achieve their goals.
