Ryba Marine Construction Co. operates in the highly specialized field of marine construction and dredging—an industry that depends on rigorous training, certifications, and a versatile workforce. Through a partnership with Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium, Ryba received $4,000 in Going PRO Talent Fund support to train two current employees and hire and train two new team members, with starting wages averaging $30 per hour.
Training provided by Great Lakes Maritime Academy at Northwestern Michigan College included Able Seaman certification, Proficiency in Survival Craft, and Basic Firefighting. These credentials equip employees with advanced skills that are critical to both safety and success in Ryba’s demanding work environment.
For Jeremiah Crawford, hired in 2023 as a Deckhand, the training created a pathway to advance into the role of Able Seaman—bringing increased responsibility and an estimated 15% wage increase. Larry Sidell, who has been with Ryba since 2015, also advanced from Deckhand to Able Seaman through this training, achieving the same wage growth and expanded duties.
By investing in employee development, Ryba strengthens its ability to remain competitive, secure federal contracts, and maintain a dynamic, highly skilled workforce that supports long-term company success and employee advancement.
Thankful for the assistance received, Kristi Bristley, Ryba’s Office Administrator, shares, “The Going PRO Talent Fund award allows Ryba Marine Construction Co. to maintain a highly skilled workforce within a specialized field.”
