On June 13th Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium’s Youth Career Advisor’s Jeanie Flory and Seth Gruenberg took 11 high school graduate students from Posen, Rogers City, Onaway, Mackinaw City, Indian River, Grayling and Wolverine High Schools on a glass bottom boat tour curtesy of Nautical North Family Adventures, which is owned and operated by an Onaway High School Alumni.
The students enjoyed a 1.5 hour tour of Lake Huron where they viewed ship wrecks and learned more about each of the wrecks they viewed. They were also given history of Lake Huron, how the currents flow, and how strong the waves can be out on the open water, as well as insight into how that affects boats and ships. The tour also included a pass by a light house and the history of why it is there.
Students enjoyed lunch aboard the boat and were looking forward to snorkeling as well, but the weather didn’t cooperate on the day of the tour.
Students asked the Ship Captain, Jennifer Dowker, many questions throughout the day, including, “Do we have to get off? This was so much fun!”
Nautical North Family Adventures will also be partnering with Michigan Works! on a Paid Work Experience for a High School Junior from Mackinaw City who is working through summer in their gift shop and assisting with tourists’ boat tours.
