Driven by a deep passion for caring for others and a desire for a meaningful, challenging career, Baylee set her sights on becoming a Registered Nurse. Inspired by a lifetime of helping family members with disabilities-including grandmothers living with rheumatoid arthritis and dementia, she developed a strong sense of empathy and responsibility at an early age. Volunteering at an assisted living facility further solidified her love for working with the elderly and confirmed that nursing was the right path.
One of the biggest draws for Baylee to the nursing profession was its versatility. With so many career pathways available, nursing offered the opportunity to grow, change specialties, and never face the same day twice. The fast-paced environment, constant problem-solving, and hands-on patient care aligned perfectly with her strengths and interests.
Baylee first learned about Michigan Works! during a nursing school orientation. Knowing that the program could help reduce the financial burden of education (even for students with loans since WIOA is last dollar) motivated her to apply. Before enrolling in the WIOA program, one of her biggest barriers was the cost of required textbooks. Through WIOA support, she received assistance with tuition, books, mileage, and even new tires for their car! These supports made it possible to stay focused and committed to her studies.
While completing the nursing program, Baylee continued working, an accomplishment she’s especially proud of due to how demanding the nursing program is. Thanks to the WIOA program, she was able to reduce her work hours and dedicate more time and energy to their education, easing stress and improving her overall success in the program.
Today, Baylee's hard work has paid off. She is employed as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Room at MyMichigan West Branch. Baylee is thriving in this fast-paced environment that challenges her daily and allows her to make a real difference in patients' lives.
When asked what advice Baylee would give to others considering the Michigan Works! WIOA program, her message is simple and encouraging: "It doesn't hurt to apply!" For Baylee, WIOA was a critical support system that helped turn a lifelong passion for caring into a successful and rewarding nursing career.
