April 17 - AuSable River Outfitters (ARO) held their first Talent Tour for twelve Fairview Schools students. AOS opened in 2015 in downtown Mio and quickly outgrew their space. Starting in 2020, they broke ground on a new building site also in Mio and officially opened their new location in 2021.
Owner, Brian Sukarukoff, started out by telling the students his story of entrepreneurship as a young adult and opening a business. He stressed to the students that it all starts by trying and putting in the hard work. During the tour there were several departments visited including footwear, clothing, recreation, camping/outdoors, fly fishing and gifts. The store also has an in-house restaurant called the Rusty Pine, a unique take out eatery offering homemade food. Students learned of open jobs that are available for summer kitchen help and the opportunity to learn culinary skills including smoking meat.
While in the fly fishing department Brian demonstrated the art of fly tying and offered the opportunity for students to learn and earn money doing it. As the tour wrapped up, students had several questions about keeping stock organized, hiring, running a store and how Brian started out as a business owner. Two students interested in cooking were offered applications, and two other students talked with the owner separately about learning fly tying.
