Joshua, a graduate of Grayling High School, has successfully launched a career in public service as a full-time firefighter with the Frederic Fire Department, with support from Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium and the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) program.
After high school, Joshua faced several barriers, including a lack of required credentials, limited work-related resources, and transportation challenges. Through coordinated support from JMG and Michigan Works!, Joshua was able to overcome these obstacles and move forward on his career pathway in emergency services.
Michigan Works! provided financial assistance for transportation to and from Frederic, along with guidance and support as Joshua completed high school and explored career options. While enrolled in the Public Safety program at Kirtland Community College, Joshua decided to shift his focus to fire service and enrolled in the Fire Academy.
With continued support, Joshua graduated from Grayling High School, joined the Frederic Fire Department, completed Fire Academy training, and earned the credentials needed to work in the field. His dedication and perseverance led to his successful transition into a full-time firefighter role.
Joshua’s story highlights the impact of youth and workforce programs in helping individuals overcome barriers, gain valuable credentials, and enter meaningful, in-demand careers. Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium is proud to support Joshua as he serves his community and builds a long-term career in fire service.
