Arauco Grayling faced a challenge familiar across the manufacturing industry: workforce shortages, retirements, and skill gaps driven by industry growth. To address these needs, the company turned to Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium for help applying for Going PRO Talent Fund (GPTF) support.

With guidance from Michigan Works!, Arauco was awarded $86,500 in GPTF funding to train 31 new hires—including three new apprentices with an average starting wage of $20.68—and support six existing apprentices.

The funding provided critical resources for on-the-job training and apprenticeships, focusing on safety, technical skills, and machine operation. Employees received hands-on instruction in areas such as Particleboard Technician training and Electrical training, delivered through a mix of internal experts and external partners. This approach ensured that workers not only met operational and safety standards, but also earned industry-recognized credentials that advance their careers.

The impact has been significant. Apprentices and new hires gained the skills to work more safely and efficiently, reducing downtime and strengthening overall productivity. Many were able to take on new responsibilities and advance within the company. Trainee Jack McAuliffe, AP & Mill Finance in Grayling, reflected on his experience, sharing “At Arauco, my on-site training with the mill finance team and remote collaboration with individuals in similar roles at other mills allowed me to adapt my previous job and education experience to excel in my current role.”

For Arauco, the benefits go beyond individual success stories. By leveraging the Going PRO Talent Fund with the support of Michigan Works!, the company built a stronger, safer, and more capable workforce—helping secure its future growth while providing employees with valuable career pathways.
