Lakin entered her final semester of the Cardiac Sonography program determined to finish strong. However, as tuition costs and clinical requirements increased, so did the financial strain. She did not qualify for traditional financial aid—other than student loans, which she was committed to avoiding. Unemployed and traveling 40 miles one way to her clinical site, fuel costs alone became a significant burden. With tuition and daily travel expenses mounting, completing her final semester was at risk.
After hearing about Michigan Works! during a presentation at Kirtland Community College’s Cardiac Sonography Orientation, Lakin found renewed hope. She quickly connected with Michigan Works! Career Advisor Tracy Bohl to explore possible support options. Together, they identified alternative funding sources, completed necessary applications, and secured tuition assistance and mileage reimbursement.
With financial pressure lifted, Lakin was able to focus fully on her clinical experience and coursework—without taking on additional student loan debt. Her hard work and professionalism did not go unnoticed. Upon completing her program, she was offered and accepted a position at her clinical site, MyMichigan Health in Saginaw.
Today, Lakin is proudly beginning her career as a cardiac sonographer. Her story is a powerful example of determination, resourcefulness, and the impact that the right support at the right time can make.
