Dakota knew he wanted a career in law enforcement, but financial barriers threatened to delay his dream. After receiving partial funding through a Pell Grant to attend the Kirtland Regional Police Academy, he still faced a significant gap in tuition costs. Living a considerable distance from the academy also meant transportation expenses would be another challenge.
With the academy start date quickly approaching, Police Academy Program Director Christopher Periatt reached out to Michigan Works! Career Advisor Tracy Bohl to see if they could assist. Tracy met with Dakota and acted fast to provide tuition assistance and mileage reimbursement, ensuring he could begin training without delay. Throughout the academy, Dakota demonstrated initiative by interviewing with several law enforcement agencies while completing the demanding program.
Dakota graduated from the Kirtland Regional Police Academy on May 8, 2026, and just three days later began his career with the Charlevoix City Police Department. His story demonstrates how timely support and strong partnerships can remove barriers and help dedicated individuals achieve careers in public service.
