Building a Stronger Corrections Workforce Through Apprenticeship

Like many employers, the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department was facing significant workforce challenges. The Corrections Division was dealing with an overcrowded jail, staff retirements and burnout, and the constant demands of day-to-day operations. With so much time spent addressing immediate needs, creating a structured training pipeline for future Corrections Officers was a challenge.
Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium stepped in to help.
Working closely with Michigan Works! Apprenticeship Specialist Jeremiah Johnston, the department established and implemented a Registered Apprenticeship Program for Corrections Officers. What initially seemed like a process that might involve significant "red tape" became much more manageable with Jeremiah's responsive communication, guidance, and hands-on assistance throughout the process.
The department has since embraced Registered Apprenticeship as a valuable tool for developing its workforce. Most recently, Nicole Arnold and Jacob Seaman successfully completed their Registered Apprenticeships in Corrections, earning certificates recognizing their accomplishments. Both apprentices were supported throughout their training by Lt. Brenda Beckwith, Jail Administrator, and the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department.
The program is already helping create opportunities for continued career growth. Jacob is now transitioning into a new role and is currently training as a Deputy Patrol Officer, building on the experience and skills he developed during his time in Corrections.
For the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department, Registered Apprenticeship has helped turn a workforce challenge into an opportunity to intentionally develop and retain talent from within. By partnering with Michigan Works!, the department has been able to focus on what it does best—serving and protecting the community—while receiving the support needed to build a stronger pipeline of trained employees.
Congratulations to Nicole and Jacob on completing their Registered Apprenticeships, and thank you to the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department for continuing to be such a strong advocate for Registered Apprenticeship!
