Youth Program Helps Young Adult Work Towards New Career

Jose came to Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium’s Youth Career Advisor Jeanie Flory looking for assistance to attend Alpena Community College to become a mechanic. Jose was driving back and forth from Onaway to Alpena for school and it was becoming quite costly, so he decided it was time to find an apartment in Alpena with his girlfriend.

Jose came Jeanie stating that he couldn’t find employment that would work around his school schedule. Jeanie worked with Downtown 76 to get Jose a possible Paid Work Experience position that would work around his school schedule. Downtown 76 agreed and a Paid Work Experience was set up for October 2021 through January 2022. Both Jeanie and Jose were hopeful he’d get hired on after completion of the Work Experience program.

On January 11th, Jose was hired on by Downtown 76 and even got a wage increase. Jose will now be completing his mechanic experience, along with completing school.

With the assistance from the WIOA In-School Youth program, Jose was provided rental assistance, mileage, require clothing, and assistance with his college text books.

Jose states that without the help of his Youth Career Advisor Jeanie, he would not have been able to remain in school and be able to work part-time.
