Sparking a Future in the Skilled Trades

As a student at Grayling High School, Mariah knew she wanted to pursue a career in the electrical field. However, completing her training came with challenges beyond the classroom. Traveling long distances to attend classes at the Gaylord MTEC building created significant transportation costs, and finding affordable housing near school became another barrier.

Through the Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium WIOA In-School Youth Program, Mariah received support to help overcome these obstacles. Michigan Works! assisted with transportation expenses, rent and utility costs, and vehicle-related expenses to help ensure she could continue attending training. Staff also supported Mariah in exploring apprenticeship opportunities to help her take the next step toward her career goals.

With determination and support, Mariah successfully completed the Electrical Certificate of Completion from Kirtland Community College, gaining valuable skills and training to prepare her for a career in the skilled trades.

Finding housing near her training location was one of the challenges Mariah faced along the way, but with guidance and assistance, she was able to apply for housing at the new Alger Apartments and continue moving forward.

Mariah’s journey demonstrates the impact of removing barriers and providing support at the right time. With her certificate earned and her career path taking shape, she is now prepared to continue building a bright future in the electrical trades.
