May 4, 2026 - Five students from Atlanta Community Schools recently had the opportunity to explore careers in the automotive industry during a Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium Talent Tour to Northern Performance Cars in Gaylord. The tour gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the skills, technology, and creativity involved in automotive performance and repair.

During the visit, students observed a vehicle on a dynamometer (dyno) machine, examined modified vehicles up close, and learned about the science behind vehicle performance. They also had the opportunity to sit in vehicles, look underneath them, and see firsthand how mechanics diagnose and solve complex automotive issues.

The tour highlighted the importance of math, welding, fabrication, and problem-solving skills in the automotive field. Students learned that successful mechanics combine technical knowledge with persistence, as diagnosing vehicle issues is not always straightforward. They were encouraged to think big, pursue their interests, and consider the many career opportunities available in the skilled trades.

By connecting classroom learning with real-world careers, the Talent Tour helped students gain a better understanding of the automotive industry and the pathways available to them after graduation.
