James registered with Michigan Works! Youth Services to help him reach his educational and employment goals. He also participated in the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates program, attending the JMG Leadership Day and learning teambuilding, communication, and self-advocacy skills.

Working with his Michigan Works! Youth Career Advisor Allison, James was not only able to secure his driver’s license, but also participate in a work experience with a local lumber/tinder company. He received support from Michigan Works! for the required work clothing and mileage reimbursement. James also completed many career exploration opportunities, including Talent Tours, speaker events, and the self-paced Career Readiness and Exploration program.

In May, James graduated from Hillman Community schools and is currently pursuing his Merchant Mariners certification to secure employment as a Seaman on the Great Lakes. Working with Michigan Works!, James learned that persistence and the ability to set and follow through on goals really pays off.
