Michigan Works! Guides Single Mom to Self-Sustaining and Fulfilling Job Working with Animals

Angela, a single mom, came to Michigan Works! on a referral for the PATH program to find a more self-sustaining job that she could enjoy. She currently had a part-time job with Dollar Tree making $10.10 an hour and averaging 12 hours a week. She began working with her Career Advisor, Holly, hoping to find a position working with animals, since she had a veterinary assistant certificate. However, without the experience, she had been turned down for the job opportunities that she had applied for with Vet clinics.

Angela worked with Career Navigator Christina to hone her interview skills and update her resume, and Holly and Christina listened to Angela’s career interests in order to guide her to a job she would find satisfaction in. When Holly informed Angela of a job opportunity with the AuSable Valley Animal Shelter, she applied for the position and got the job. She now is making over 30% more than she was and has worked her way up to 30 hours per week.

Angela is happy with her new career and hopes this position will lead to her utilizing her Veterinary Assistant certification at the Shelter. She is even receiving professional development at the Shelter in training dogs, which she hasn't had much experience with. Angela loves going to work now! Her parents have even commented that they have never seen her smile so much when she talks about her work.
