Manufacturing Month Tours Connect Students with Local Career Opportunities
On October 21, 2026, 12 students from the COOR Advanced Technical Innovation Center visited two Grayling manufacturers, Alro Steel and CSI Emergency Apparatus, to explore careers in manufacturing, metalworking, and welding.
The tours gave students representing schools throughout COOR ISD an inside look at local industries and the skills needed to succeed in these hands-on careers.
At Alro Steel, students learned how the company supplies metal products and provides processing services for a wide range of industries. Jason Campbell led students through the facility, explaining equipment, safety practices, and different metalworking processes. Students also viewed a presentation about the company's services, asked questions, and learned about current trends in the steel industry.
At CSI Emergency Apparatus, students explored the specialized manufacturing process behind custom emergency vehicles. Mark Brown led a tour of one of the company's plants, showcasing tools, equipment, and common welding techniques. Students viewed current projects and learned how each apparatus is designed and built to meet the unique needs of the agency it serves.
These Manufacturing Month tours provided students with valuable opportunities to connect classroom learning with real-world applications, explore in-demand skills, and discover potential career paths right here in Northern Michigan.
Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium thanks Alro Steel and CSI Emergency Apparatus for opening their doors and helping students explore the possibilities in manufacturing!
