Manufacturing Month: Mio Students Explore Welding and Metal Fabrication Careers in Onaway

On October 29, 2026, 16 students from Mio High School had the opportunity to explore careers in welding and metal fabrication through tours of Industrial Arts Institute and Moran Iron Works in Onaway, Michigan.
The day began at Industrial Arts Institute, where students viewed the many artistic sculptures created by students and professionals, including the impressive dragon sculpture greeting visitors at the entrance. They also toured the welding lab and got an up-close look at the equipment used in the institute's training programs. Students were especially interested in learning about the different welding program options, techniques, and types of welds. As one student shared, they were intrigued by "how they do things, the different options about welding programs and all the different types of welds."
After a quick lunch break, the group headed to Moran Iron Works, where students got a firsthand look at the scale and complexity of metal fabrication projects. They were particularly impressed by a large aluminum boat currently under construction and had the opportunity to see the craftsmanship and skills that go into projects of this size.
Experiences like these give students a chance to step outside the classroom and see what local career opportunities look like in the real world. By exploring training options, seeing professionals at work, and learning about the skills needed in the industry, students can begin to picture a future in welding and metal fabrication.
Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium thanks Industrial Arts Institute and Moran Iron Works for welcoming students and helping them explore career possibilities right here in Northern Michigan!
