Laborer Drives to Advance Career with Help from Michigan Works!

Prior to graduating from high school, Kolby worked summers for a local landscaping company. Upon graduating from high school in May 2021, he was offered a laborer position with S & J Excavating. In order to advance in the company and receive a raise, Kolby needed to obtain his CDL-A endorsement. He learned about the Michigan Works! tuition assistance program from a co-worker who also obtained his CDL-A with the help of Michigan Works as well, so he stopped in to see if he could qualify.

Kolby talked to Michigan Works! Career Advisor Tracy Bohl about the program and explained how he wasn’t making enough money as a laborer to save for or pay for truck driving school. Upon completion of the paperwork process, Kolby was enrolled in the 3-week course at Road Warrior Truck Driving School in Gaylord.

In addition to the tuition assistance, Michigan Works! also helped Kolby with mileage reimbursement to/from his training.

After receiving his CDL-A, Kolby returned to work as a truck driver, which comes with increased responsibility and pay.

When asked, Kolby stated, "If it wasn't for Michigan Works! helping me with tuition, it would have taken me years to save up the money and by that time, the cost would probably increase!”
