Zach had watched many people pursue higher education only to graduate with significant debt. He was determined to build a career — but without the financial burden that often comes with it.
With support from Michigan Works! and guidance from Career Advisor Niki Chamberlain, Zach was able to earn his Welding Fabrication certificate at Alpena Community College. Multiple funding sources helped cover his tuition and rent, allowing him to focus fully on his training instead of worrying about debt.
Living away from home helped him mature and gain confidence, both personally and professionally. After completing his program, Zach secured a position with SPI in Alpena as a General Welder/Laborer, starting at $19 per hour with a raise after 30 days.
Today, Zach is not only launching a career in a high-demand skilled trade — he’s doing it debt-free and with confidence in his future.
“Michigan Works! helped me get my certificate and eased the financial burden,” Zach shared. “I’m very thankful for all of the services Michigan Works! provided.”
