From Maternity Leave to Full-Time Independence - Christina's Success

When Christina applied for assistance through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), she was preparing to go on maternity leave and knew she would need temporary support for herself and her children. As a single mom of three—soon to be caring for a newborn as well—she was doing everything she could to stay afloat during a challenging season.

As a condition of receiving food assistance, Christina was referred to the PATH program at Michigan Works! at the beginning of January, just as her maternity leave was ending. Transitioning back to work was not easy. One of her children required extensive medical appointments downstate, limiting the hours she could accept. Although she had returned to her job, she was frustrated to still rely on cash assistance due to reduced hours.

With support from Michigan Works!, Christina was able to navigate this difficult transition. Her Career Advisor assigned flexible, at-home job readiness activities that allowed her to complete required program hours on her own schedule while gradually easing back into her role as a caregiver. Activities focused on time management, problem solving, mindfulness, and staying focused—skills that proved invaluable as she balanced work and parenting responsibilities.

Within about a month, Christina was able to increase her work hours and regain her independence. Today, she is employed full-time as a caregiver with ComForCare in Gaylord, earning $17 per hour.

Christina’s determination, combined with the flexibility and support of Michigan Works!, helped her overcome significant barriers. By meeting her where she was and providing practical tools she could use at home, the program empowered her to move from temporary assistance to long-term stability for herself and her children.
