Evan was enrolled in Northern Michigan University’s one-year Utility Technology program, where obtaining a CDL-A was an important step toward entering the utility industry. To help him complete this requirement without adding to his student loan debt, Michigan Works! provided tuition assistance for his CDL-A training.

Highly motivated to move quickly toward his career goals, Evan chose to complete the training at the beginning of the Winter 2026 semester rather than waiting until later in the program. He successfully finished his CDL-A training on February 13, earning his CDL-A along with multiple endorsements.

Before graduating in May, Evan received a career opportunity he couldn’t pass up. He accepted a position with Michels Underground Cable, Inc. in Port Washington, Wisconsin, where he began work on April 6, 2026, as a Groundsman/Driver, earning $31.83 per hour. Although he did not complete the remainder of the semester at NMU, his new employer is providing the additional training he needs to continue building his career in the utility industry.

Michigan Works! support played an important role in helping Evan reach this milestone by covering the cost of his CDL-A training and reducing the financial burden of additional student loans.

Evan shared, “Michigan Works! guided me through the whole process of getting my CDL-A paid for so I would not need to take out more student loans. They were always more than willing to help and very kind and courteous.” He added, “I now have my CDL-A, along with multiple endorsements, which wouldn’t have been possible without the help from Michigan Works! I am very grateful for the support.”

Now launched into a high-demand career, Evan is excited about the path ahead and encourages others with this advice: “If you want something, go after it! You can’t sit and wait around.”
