Smiling graduate Zoey, in green cap and gown, stands on campys bridge, with a Spartan logo on a billboard behind her.

Zoey learned about Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium's WIOA Program through her mother while pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science at Michigan State University. Like many college students, she faced the challenge of balancing tuition, living expenses, and the growing burden of student loan debt while working toward her degree.

Through the WIOA program, Michigan Works! was able to braid funding sources to provide tuition assistance, rent assistance, career planning, training support, and other supportive services. This assistance helped relieve financial stress and allowed Zoey to stay focused on her education and long-term career goals.

Throughout her time in the program, Zoey not only successfully completed her degree but also improved her GPA each semester, demonstrating her commitment to academic excellence and personal growth.

On May 2, Zoey graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and is now pursuing employment in her chosen field.

Reflecting on her experience, Zoey shared, “I am grateful for the help, as it lessened the burden of taking out more student loans. Michigan Works! is great to work with and can help with a variety of services that support students while they are in school.” She also expressed appreciation for her Career Advisor, Abby, who regularly checked in throughout her college journey and helped ensure she had the support she needed to succeed.

Zoey’s story demonstrates how perseverance, combined with the right support, can help students overcome financial barriers, achieve their educational goals, and take the next step toward a rewarding career.
