May 11, 2026 -Â Fifteen students from Atlanta Community Schools recently participated in a Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium Talent Tour at the Gaylord Regional Airport, where they explored the many careers that keep aviation operations running safely and efficiently.
The experience introduced students to careers in aviation maintenance, airport operations, and aerial firefighting while providing a firsthand look at the professionals behind the scenes.
The tour began with North Country Aviation, where students met with aviation mechanics and learned about the technical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities required to maintain aircraft. Students then visited the airport maintenance facility to see the equipment and personnel responsible for keeping airport operations functioning year-round.
Students also toured the airport terminal and met with the airport director to learn about airport management and operations. A highlight of the day was meeting with the Fire Boss aerial firefighting team, including pilots and support crew members. Students learned how firefighting aircraft are dispatched, how they collect and store water, and the critical role they play in responding to wildfires, including a recent fire north of Atlanta.
One of the most memorable experiences for students was the opportunity to climb inside aircraft and gain an up-close look at aviation careers in action. Along the way, they learned about the education, training, and experience needed for positions ranging from entry-level airport jobs to specialized roles such as Fire Boss pilots.
The Talent Tour helped students discover the wide range of opportunities available within the aviation industry and encouraged them to consider career paths they may not have previously explored.
