Turning an On-the-Job Training Opportunity into a Career

Elijah was eager to enter the trades and build a stable, hands-on career, but getting started required more than motivation. He needed the proper tools and equipment to begin working successfully in flooring installation, and someone to provide him with training guidance.
Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium helped Elijah connect with Young’s Flooring and enrolled him in an on-the-job training opportunity. Through the Barrier Removal Employment Success (BRES) program, Michigan Works! also provided essential work boots and professional tools, ensuring he had what he needed to learn the trade and perform his job safely.
Elijah demonstrated dedication and craftsmanship throughout his training, leading his employer to hire him as a permanent, full-time flooring installer.
Today, Elijah is building his skills, learning the trade, and gaining valuable hands-on experience. His journey shows how removing practical barriers and connecting job seekers with training opportunities can help turn an initial opportunity into lasting employment.
