Johannesburg-Lewiston Students Tour H.B. Carbide for Manufacturing Day

October 6, 2023 – Twenty-one Johannesburg-Lewiston students from their Construction Trades Classes participated in a Talent Tour at H.B. Carbide in Lewiston. The tour was coordinated by Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium for Manufacturing Day.

The students had a full tour of the facility. They were able to hold and touch a few pieces of carbide in-process, as well as a finished product, and a container with the powder in it that starts the process. For comparison, they were able to see an unfinished product next to a finished product, to see the size difference due to the heat shrinking. Students were also able to see the shipping and receiving areas, CNC, product room, and more.

H.B. Carbide staff discussed the many different career pathways available, including production, engineer, 3d printing tech, cnc operator, office positions, and more. Staff used the Career Investigator Tool in their discussion and Michigan Works! staff offered Career Pathfinder flyers for students to take with them.
