April 4—Indian River Juniors toured PIE & G (Presque Isle Electric & Gas) to see the new building and learn about all the new projects and career opportunities available. During their tour there were demonstrations by a Gas Technician and a Lineman, showing the students a “hot line” demo. As the students toured each department, employees talked about their jobs, provided job descriptions, education requirements for the jobs, and day-in-the-life experience stories. In addition, Tiffany Larson, HR with PIE&G, presented a powerpoint to the students showing the career paths, education requirements, and wage expectations.
Michigan Works! staff also discussed how to use the online tool “Career Pathfinder”.
Students said they learned a lot during the tour, not only about gas/electric safety and careers, but also that “all jobs aren’t just lineman jobs”. Students say they were very happy with the tour, but wished there were more hands-on activities included. All say they hope to do additional tours in the future.
