She Left a Controlling Husband - Now She's Taking Control of Her Future

After being married for 21 years in a controlling relationship, Tonya filed for divorce. For years she wasn’t allowed to work or have any money, but she decided it was time to make a better life for her and her kids. She knew she’d have a difficult road ahead, but she had the determination to push forward. She got hired at Medilodge of Cheboygan, but needed help with a few barriers that would impede her employment success. She stopped at Michigan Works! of Cheboygan to see if they could help.

Michigan Works! Career Navigators, Kelli and Rachel, were able to utilize BRES funding (Barrier Removal Employment Success) to help purchase scrubs and work required tools for Tonya. The funding also helped with auto insurance and registration, and may soon help with car repairs.

Tonya says she learned that she is worthy of happiness and to never let anyone control her. She plans to make her own income and thrive.

“It took a lot to file for divorce and I’m proud of myself,” says Tonya. “ …the wonderful ladies (Kelli and Rachel) at Michigan Works! are working hard to get through this process of helping me. I am so thankful for all their help.”

Tonya’s son agreed, stating “The ladies at Michigan Works! made my Mom cry happy tears because they worked hard to help her.”
